We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming the National Adult Choir of the Year 2016, Voices of Hope, to Wylam Winter Tales 2017. Founded by Music Director Simon Fidler in 2011, Voices of Hope has performed extensively across the North East, including Sage Gateshead, St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Metro Radio Arena and Durham Cathedral as well as more unusual venues like the National Railway Museum in Shildon.

They have quickly established themselves as one of the top chamber choirs in the region and have also toured in the UK and abroad, visiting Berlin in 2015 and Cambridgeshire in 2016 to sing evensong at Ely Cathedral. Most recently, Voices of Hope were crowned Adult Choir of the Year 2016 at Symphony Hall in Birmingham. With a keen sense of local identity, Voices of Hope regularly perform music by local composers, having premiered works by Ian Stephenson, John Kefala Kerr, Kathryn Tickell and Professor Agustin Fernandez from Newcastle University amongst others.

The choir often perform works by Percy Lovell, a composer who was also a lecturer at Newcastle University between 1966 and 1984. Percy and his wife Mary were residents of Wylam, and Percy conducted a number of local groups including the Newcastle Bach Choir and Tyneside Chamber Orchestra. Tonight’s concert will particularly feature some of Percy Lovell’s choral music and to add extra interest there will also be a short talk by David Appleton, friend of the Lovell family, and collector of some of his music.
