FREE EVENT: Booking Required

Please Note: Children must be accompanied by an adult at this event.

Our opening event at this year’s Festival will bring the community together around a creative Wylam version of the traditional apple tree celebration of Wassailing. Using music, spoken word and poetry we’ll hear from traditional musicians, members of Wylam Orchard and a special choir from Wylam First School. Led by singer-songwriter Bethany Elen Coyle they will sing us a Festival commissioned song to serenade the apple trees and encourage a good harvest for next autumn. After a presentation in the Greenhouse at Tom & Joe’s nursery we’ll process in a very short torchlit parade to some apple trees on site where the ceremony will finish around a bonfire. Refreshments including a special Wylam Wassail will be on sale. Come along, wrap up warm and raise a glass and your voice for the fruit of the earth.

NB: Please do come with warm winter clothing, hats, gloves, scarves etc. The indoor space will be partially heated but it will be cold as we process to the apple trees on site. In the event of very bad weather we may have to cancel the event. Notice will be given the evening before on the Wylam Winter Tales website and via our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
