Winter Tales : An Afternoon at The Opera

We’re disappointed to have to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances Tenor Nicky Spence will be unable to be with us at Wylam Winter Tales 2018. However, we are delighted that 'An Afternoon At The Opera' will now go ahead with a full programme from Mezzo Soprano Madeleine Shaw. A very enjoyable show is in prospect and we look forward to welcoming Madeleine and our Festival audience for a great afternoon at St Oswin’s Church.

Today’s Festival programme kicks off with two fantastically talented practitioners of the Operatic Arts - Mezzo Soprano Madeleine Shaw and Tenor Nicki Spence. What a musical treat to have two accomplished professionals take us through some of their favourite songs on a winter’s afternoon. Taking their inspiration from the Festival theme we’ll hear classics and contemporary favourites all delivered with wit and style in the wonderful surroundings of St Oswin’s Church.

Madeleine Shaw studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and at the National Opera Studio supported by English National Opera, she was subsequently on the young artist programme at ENO, for whom she has sung several roles over the recent seasons.

Madeleine has also appeared in principle roles at Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Opera North and on the concert platform has guested with Noseda, Sir Andrew Davis, Edward Gardner and has made regular appearances with the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder.

Hailed by the Daily Telegraph as ‘a voice of real distinction, Nicky Spence is fast emerging as 'one of our brightest young tenors.’ An artist of great integrity, Nicky Spence's unique skills as a singing actor and the rare honesty in his musicianship are steadfastly earning him a place at the top of the profession. Scottish born, Nicky trained at the Guildhall School and the NOS and progressed to become one of the inaugural Harewood Artists at the English National Opera. He is also a Samling Artist, recently joining their team as a leader of young singers, and was nominated by the International Opera Awards for Young Singer of the Year in 2015.
