Wylam Winter Tales is thrilled to welcome back three of the North East’s most sought after musicians – Andy May (Northumbrian pipes), Ian Stephenson (guitar) and Sophy Ball (fiddle) – here they join forces to create a compelling, high energy instrumental folk, inspired by the music of their native North East.
Expect tradition and innovation in equal measure, along with an entertaining mixture of history lessons, silly stories and sparkly shoes!
Northumbrian piper Andy May (Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies, Baltic Crossing), guitarist Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing) and fiddler Sophy Ball (422, Bottle Bank Band) met in the early 2000’s on Newcastle’s vibrant session scene. Fast forward to 2015 and the time felt right to form a trio to focus on high energy instrumental folk, inspired by the music of their native North East. Since then, the band has released 4 albums, and travelled widely to perform at gigs and festivals both in the UK and on the continent.
There's a certain connection only heard between musicians after many years' playing together; after almost two decades’ music making in various guises the tight interplay and sense of fun between these three friends is sure to delight.
