As part of our activities around Railway200 we’re proud to invite you to a Winter Tales screening of this fantastic new documentary made in the region (and featuring some footage of Wylam !) about the origin story of one of the most famous lines of all. The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on the morning of the 27th of September 1825 marked the birth of modern railways. Built by George Stephenson, this twenty-six mile line in the North East of England was a significant milestone, and the beginning of a railway network that would eventually span the world. ‘Iron & Steam – The Dawn of the Stockton & Darlington Railway’ investigates how this ground-breaking line came to be, as well as exploring the early mineral railways that led to this incredible achievement. Featuring the latest research and interviews with experts, the film tells a comprehensive story of the railway that delivered the modern world.
Tonight’s event will feature a short pre-screening talk by the filmmakers Mark and Marie from Lonely Tower Film & Media to offer some unique insight into how it was made and the stories they uncovered.
