The chill of the winter evening will be left at the door, the church will be candlelit and the artists will be ready to transport you into another world of myth and legend. Nine years since his last visit to Winter Tales we’re excited to welcome back master storyteller Hugh Lupton accompanied by the wonderful cellist Sarah Moody as they present “When The Morning Stars Sang”. Tonight demons and angels, animals and birds, men and women and the voice from the heart of the whirlwind all contend in this rich interweaving of mysterious Apocryphal and Old Testament tales drawing from Jewish, Islamic and Christian sources. Adam and Eve, Solomon and Sheba, Tobias and the Angel, Job and his Comforters all make an appearance. The stories are underpinned by wonderful cello playing, inspired by the ancient music of all three Abrahamic traditions, reminding us that at the core of all three cultures lies a shared mythology.

Hugh Lupton is an award-winning storyteller, performer and author. He is also a poet and lyricist. His work spans over 35 years, working on both solo projects and in partnership with other artists, writers, musicians, illustrators and performers. He has toured both nationally and internationally and has performed at the RSC, the National Theatre and the Barbican, as well as at schools, community venues and arts centres the length and breadth of Britain. His repertoire ranges from Greek epic to Grimms Fairy Tales, from Norse and Celtic myth to East Anglian folk-tales, from the Great War to John Clare. Thematically his work often explores our place in the landscape and the deep cultural memories we carry.

Sarah Moody has worked for over 25 years as a musician, music director and composer for theatre, dance, storytelling and film. She composed the music for the film, A Year in A Field and co-founded The Devil’s Violin - a storytelling and music company that tours performances throughout the UK and Europe. She plays cello with The Bristol Ceilidh Quartet and jazz pianist/composer Andy Christie and collaborates with storyteller Hugh Lupton.
